Psychoanalysis & Psychotherapy
In brief, psychotherapy is the process of improving your relationship to your whole self (and others) in the frame of your own humanity. It is working to understand the dynamics of the parallel and opposing forces guiding your thoughts, feelings and manifest behaviors. Psychoanalysis, in accordance, is the tool in which to accomplish this betterment, establishing alignment and cohesiveness under the guidance of what makes you, genuinely you. In other words, via exploration and recognition, understanding, mourning and integration, you can self-actualize (a true, woo-woo sounding thing), realizing your utmost potential. It is a process of cultivating opportunity to strive to the limits of your person and towards fulfilling and meaningful relationships. It is work towards agency and towards choice, a freedom from (un)felt compromise AND a freedom to derive your own wishes. It is incorporating lived phenomena so as to render you your own author of self, no longer driven by outside, out of mind forces. Pardon all the metaphors.
Think of it this way: if the experience of your life is merely surviving within a 10 unit sphere, falsely limited by those pesky unconscious conflicts and drives—and by painful symptoms—then this process allows and invites you to experience full living within 15 or 20 or even 40 units of three dimensional space, whatever the true and real parameters of you actually are.
Consultations & Appointments
Initial consultations can be made via the contact page. Consultations involve a brief, 15 to 25-minute assessment and data gathering to identify an appropriate treatment plan. This is to ensure goodness of fit as well. A scheduled “intake” thereafter is a more comprehensive at about 70 minutes. Appointments, or individual psychotherapy sessions, are for 55 minutes. I see patients once, twice, three, four even five times per week, depending on the treatment plan and approach. Formal psychoanalysis is usually of three times per week, while psychodynamic treatment can be had once or twice per week. These are not mutually exclusive modalities and can be fit to meet your needs, concerns and goals.
Fee
I am an "out-of-network" approved service provider, meaning I do not accept insurance. However, I do provide you with appropriate receipts/superbill for reimbursement from your insurance company if you do have "out-of-network" benefits. This is something to discuss with your insurance provider. However, this does not mean the value and cost of your treatment is not considered. I also provide sliding-scale services, prioritizing analytic treatment at market cost for students, therapists and others keen on this type of work. This can all be discussed during consultation. To borrow the parlance, this process is much akin to an Emotional IRA (Individual Retirement Account) where you are paid dividends upon your own investment over time.
Services
As previously mentioned, I provide both psychodynamic and psychoanalytic psychotherapy. This is an exclusively individual treatment. Although this is the arena in which I find treatment more effective and therapeutic, I also provide adjuvant couple's counseling and family group work. This is often contingent upon specific situations and requests. For example, if the couple is also in individual treatment (with another therapist), I will see them together, or, if either partner or family member requires individual treatment, I can provide that service to supplement the interpersonal therapy. Similarly, I do provide group or family treatment depending on setting, purpose and goals. This can all be discussed on phone or email as well.
Executive/Academic Coaching
Within the vein of psychotherapeutic treatment, I can also furnish an amalgam of neuro-psychanalytic approaches to stuck-points in your vocational or academic career. This “brand” of work can seem like watered-down therapy, but often leads to characterological healing when concerns are surfaced and identified within the “self-at-work” and not outside of one’s own psychology. This, of course, can be unpacked much further upon consultation as well.
